Reflections on Catholic schools by some of our current students
This year’s theme for Catholic School’s week is: Dividends For Life. Here are a few of the essays written by our students as they reflect on the impact of Catholic Schools in their life.
Hello, my name is Anthony. I am here to tell you about “Catholic Schools: Dividends for Life, Morals, Discipline, Faith, and Knowledge” and how my school teaches them.
The first dividend I would like to talk about is morals. Here at St. Bernard School the teachers and principal teach us morals that help us in making good choices. They also guide our decision-making, which helps me be a better person.
The next dividend I will discuss is discipline. There are rules here we need to follow. If we break one, we must deal with the consequences in some way. This builds self-discipline. Over the past years at St. Bernard’s, I have been able to show discipline in class by my actions.
Now, I would like to bring up the dividend of faith. In the morning we go to Mass and Father Martin teaches us about the Gospel and readings. After that we have religion class because we are at a Catholic school. Each school day we grow and learn about our faith. We also learn about the sacraments and participate in them. Because my mom and dad are strong in faith, they want me to be too. I am happy I have learned about the Catholic faith.
The last dividend I would like to talk about is knowledge. One of the things we grow in is knowledge about our faith, but we learn about so much more: math, science, social studies, English, spelling, Quest, and reading. I think we are farther than other schools in education. I have high expectations for myself in succeeding in my classes in the future.
That is what “Catholic Schools Week: Dividends for Life” means to me.
Hi! I’m Clare. I’m in the 6th grade at St. Bernard’s Catholic School. This year’s Catholic Schools Week theme is: Catholic Schools, dividends for life.
I think St. Bernard’s School is awesome! St. Bernard’s is a great place to learn and make friends for a lifetime. One thing they teach is how to use a dictionary. So here are some words and definitions that I think should be in a Catholic School’s dictionary.
Discipline: 1. Training your mind to tell yourself no 2. Working hard to improve 3. A dividend taught at St. Bernard’s Catholic School 4. Waiting your turn to speak by raising your hand until called upon
Faith: 1. Belief in God 2. Religion or beliefs 3. Trusting in friends 4. What we go to Mass to practice almost every weekday 5. Something available at St. Bernard’s school 24/7 6. The reason why we start our day with prayer 7. What communion and religion class helps us to strengthen
Knowledge 1. All that is known or can be taught 2. What an education from St. Bernard’s Catholic School gives us a lot of 3. What kids go to school to learn
Morals: 1. Principals of behavior 2. Virtues 3. Something not only taught in a Catholic School, but acted upon 4. A gift that when used will improve our lives 5. Something St. Bernard teachers teach that doesn’t always come from a book, but from experience and the heart
These are just a few dividends for life we receive from going to St. Bernard’s Catholic School.
St. Bernard’s Catholic School is where my brothers and sisters went to school. St. Bernard’s School is also where my great-grand-parents went to school. I’m lucky to be a Catholic, and luckier to go to a Catholic School. I hope future generations will be as lucky as I am.
Hi, I’m Kassidi. I am a sixth grader at St. Bernard’s Catholic School in Cologne. This year’s theme for Catholic School’s week is: Dividends For Life. I am going to tell you what this theme means to me, and how our school will help us during our lives.
I think the four dividends of the theme: Dividends For Life means more than we think. Those special dividends are faith, knowledge, morals, and discipline. Each dividend will help nourish us through our lives.
Faith-Faith is a great and important thing at St. Bernard’s School. Every morning, except Wednesday, we go to church. Father reads the Gospel and does the homily, and we sing and pray. Also, we have religion class every day at school. We pray after every recess and before and after lunch. All these great signs of faith help nourish us at St Bernard’s School.
Morals-St. Bernard’s helps us with our morals by having rules that help us understand what’s right and wrong. Especially in kindergarten, knowing these rules helped me to learn, but now that I’m in sixth grade, I can teach these rules to the kindergarteners. St. Bernard’s also helps us with our morals by showing us what’s right and wrong so that when we become adults or teenagers, we will make better choices and become better people as well. We also have a program called Quest we do every Wednesday. It teaches us o be better people when we become older.
Knowledge- I really enjoy St. Bernard’s for many reasons. One of the most important reasons is all the knowledge that we receive. We have many great subjects in our school. They all share a special part in our lives. We learn our subjects quicker than some other schools, so when I go to Central next year that will make it much easier for me. We learn so many things and the teachers help us understand everything that we are confused on.
Discipline- We learn discipline at a very early age at St. Bernard’s School. Doing this will help us to make decisions better and easier when we grow older. We will not make bad decisions that will ruin our lives. This school has helped improve my discipline so much and I thank all the staff for doing that.
If we put all these dividends together, we get one great school-St Bernard’s!!!!
Hi, my name is April, and I am in 6th grade at St. Bernard School. This year the theme for Catholic Schools Week is Catholic Schools, Dividends For Life: Knowledge, Faith, Morals and Discipline. I get all these values by going to St. Bernard School. Here is what they mean to me.
Knowledge: At St. Bernard’s I get a superb education. The teachers explain the lessons extremely well. If I don’t understand a lesson my teacher is right there to help me. I get personal help that I wouldn’t get at a public school. I also get to learn about God in religion class. We study the Bible and learn about God’s great love.
Faith: My faith is strengthened everyday at St. Bernard’s because I get to practice it. We go to Mass every morning and pray many times during the day. I get to talk about God, unlike at a public school. I also get to receive the sacraments of communion and reconciliation very often. I strengthen my conscience and my belief in God at St. Bernard’s. I
Morals: Morals are things that you believe in, things that you think are right. I have learned so many morals at St. Bernard’s. At St. Bernard’s I have learned what is right and wrong, not to be judgmental, and to respect others, just to name a few. These morals will help me when I am an adult to be a kinder, better person. I have developed these morals with the help of my teachers and principal. They teach me these morals by setting good examples for me to follow.
Discipline: At St. Bernard School I have learned self-discipline. I get my homework done on time and do what is best for me. The teachers encourage us to writing neatly and stay out of trouble. I also learn discipline by respecting my teachers and other adults. I keep organized and make sure I am doing what I’m supposed to. Having good self-discipline will help me very much during the rest of my life.
St. Bernard’s means so much to my family. I, my brother and sisters, my mom, and my grandpa have all gone to St. Bernard’s and have received all these dividends that we will use for the rest of our lives. Catholic schools give you everything you need to succeed and much more.
The teachers and Sister Jancy teach us all these dividends by showing good example and doing their best for us. St. Bernard’s has taught me so many things that I will take with me for the rest of my life, like when applying for a job, starting a family, and meeting new people. To go to a Catholic School like St. Bernard’s is a privilege.
